Students at one of my schools had used chalk pastels to create their treasure chests, and students at my other school learned how to shade with pencil to create theirs. We started with a value scale and then colored our papers after drawing the treasure chest and details. Students used glitter to create the treasure. I love the contrast between the glitter and the pencil drawings!

Welcome to Primary Art, home to my favorite art lessons. I am an elementary school art teacher, chronicling my favorite art lessons. I hope to bring ideas to other art teachers, parents, home school teachers, and artistic children. Here you will find a catalog of lessons for grades kindergarten through 5, as well as other art-room related stuff! Thank you for visiting!

3rd grade falling portraits
We used an 18 x 24" sheet of paper to trace our hands and shoes. Next we added a head and body and colored. Next week we will add backgrounds. I'm so excited to see what the students come up with, already they are talking about drawing trampolines and people bungie jumping and floating in outer space! So fun.

5th grade Radial Designs
Students started in the center of a square paper and made the same design in the shape of a plus sign. They then built outward adding detail and being careful to rotate the paper as they went to keep the symmetry. Next week students will use plastic wrap and water color to color the background.
