Fourth grade art in progress:
Welcome to Primary Art, home to my favorite art lessons. I am an elementary school art teacher, chronicling my favorite art lessons. I hope to bring ideas to other art teachers, parents, home school teachers, and artistic children. Here you will find a catalog of lessons for grades kindergarten through 5, as well as other art-room related stuff! Thank you for visiting!

Fourth grade pirates
Students used oil pastel, pencil, or crayons to draw pirates from their imaginations. I didn't give them too much instruction because I wanted them to be creative, but I did put up on a Smart Board pictures of an eye patch, a parrot, a hook, a peg leg, a pirate hat, a pirate jacket.

1st grade snake puppets
First graders looked at the patterns on photos of different species of snakes. We then drew our spiral and used broken lines, zig zags, wavy lines, curly lines, thick and thin lines to add line pattern. Students painted their snakes with watercolor.
The following week, students cut out their spirals and glued on popsicle sticks to hold their puppets. They colored the stick near the mouth red to look like a long tongue.

kindergarten castles
This lesson came from www.deepspacesparkle.com
We started with a directed line drawing of a castle. Students the painted with liquid watercolor. It was the first time the kindergarteners have used all of the watercolor paints at once, so I emphasized rinsing brushes after finishing each color.

Circle paintings
Visit www.circlepainting.com for videos and instructions.
Students worked on large sheets of paper (18" x 24") in groups of four to create these cooperative learning projects. We agreed to cut the pictures later so that everyone can have some of their art. They each get a color of tempera paint. One student paints a circle in the center, and they each use their colors to make designs from the center out. The students really enjoyed working together on this!
