5th grade close up pumpkins

This is a take on an artwork I found here. Students used red, orange, yellow, and brown oil pastel to create analogous colors to blend for highlighting their pumpkin! Students loved blending and each student had their own interpretation of the piece!

Kindergarten Self Portraits

Primary Color Mixing

We did this lesson with tempera cakes because the liquid watercolor was running! I saw this on a youtube video (I forgot to write down the link but I'll post it soon) and simplified it for the kids. They used two primary colors to decorate precut circles. Next we poked holes in the center with pencils and students were able to spin them to 'mix' the colors. On my display I used push pins so people could spin the student work! Great color theory lesson! 

Warm and Cool Leaves

Students studied a simplified version of warm and cool colors: red, orange, yellow and pink for warm, and green, blue, purple, and magenta for cool colors. Students looked at leaves and copied them onto their papers. They used either a set of warm or cool crayon colors to fill in their leaves in between the veins. The following week students used the opposite set of colors to paint the background. All paint was liquid water color by Sax.

5th Grade Tints

Students learned to mix tints of blues and violets. First, students painted a circle for the moon. Next, students used combinations of white, blue, and violet to create the sky. Students then switched to a smaller brush to paint the trees with black. All paint was liquid tempera.

3rd Grade Beautiful Bugs

These looked kind of cute but creepy! They are made from two ceramic pinch pots with holes pierced through them to insert the antennae and legs. Students painted with watercolor and acrylic paint.

5th grade Assemblage Art

These pieces were modeled after Assemblage Art. Students used macaroni, beans, wood, and ribbons to create a relief sculpture on a poster board. Then we spray painted (outside!) the art to make each one all one color. Disposable gloves help protect hands from spray paint!

4th grade Lighthouse Prints

Backgrounds are sponge painted and have designs from colorful sand and seashells. 

Lighthouses are styrofoam prints.

Students used the camera feature in mac books and iPads to help them draw self portraits.

4th grade paper sculptures

A quick project I did with 4th grade to fill in time while some of the students were finishing their weavings. Staple down a piece of paper, then bend, fold, curl, or twist it and staple the other end down. The students wanted to add design with hole punchers too!

4th grade op art weaving

To cut out the shapes, students glued their weavings to a thin piece of paper, so it would hold together enough for them to be able to cut their designs.

Lots of learning in this project! It took about 3-4 weeks. The first week we learned how to use the ruler to draw a straight line. I used a video from youtube. The students found that it was trickier than they thought it would be. Next we drew some art supplies in the picture and made a boarder using our rulers. The following session students colored in their pictures with crayon and were instructed to press hard and soft in different areas with their crayons. I am planning on linking this into a lesson on value later and this will give them some practice. Students used hole punchers and ribbon, yarn, string, and beads to stitch! I think they're lovely : )

1st grade Egyptian Art

 Students looked at artwork from the Ancient Egyptians. We noticed how the figures were always facing front and in profile at the same time. Students also learned about Hieroglyphics, and how the Ancient Egyptians used pictures instead of letters. We drew these pieces and added gold paint to make them pretty. Then students tore the edges of their papers to make them look like old artifacts. First grade work:

Kindergarten/1st grade marbling

We used these for our holiday cards. I bought large roasting bins. Kids put their paper on the bottom of the bit and then dipped marbles into tempera paint and set them on top of the paper. Then they picked up the bin and tilted it until the marbles rolled, leaving a paint trail. The following week I gave them stamps and crayons to finish their cards. I was able to work in a writing component by having the children fill out their cards! Warning- SUPER MESSY!!!

Kindergarten directed line farm drawing

We draw one shape and one line at a time until we have our animals and farm drawn. I leave plenty of room for children to draw their own detail! 

Fourth Grade Chalk Prints

These will be the background to the students' lighthouse prints. It's chalk shaved with a scissor suspended in water.

Second grade shaving cream prints

We are going to use these as a background to an upcoming print project.
